Four steps to your licence

Theory and practice from one team – at your own pace.

1Theory

You learn the theory through self-study with our training software – all official exam questions included, for just CHF 30.–. If you have questions, we're just a phone call away.

2Driving lessons

Double lessons of 2 × 60 minutes on the training boats MANDY and AMARENA from Steinlibach harbour. All year round thanks to cabin heating – Monday to Sunday from 8 a.m.

3Seamanship

Navigation, anchoring, knots, docking and casting off, and the language of the sea – you learn everything a skipper needs to master, including the Lake Constance navigation regulations.

4Exam

The practical exam takes 60 minutes – and you take it on the boat you know from your training.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need a Category A boating licence?

On Lake Constance you need the licence for motorboats with more than 4.4 kW of engine power (on all other Swiss waters from 6 kW). The Swiss boating licence is valid throughout Switzerland, including the border waters.

How many driving lessons do I need before the exam?

There is no prescribed number of lessons. Expect around 20 hours and up – depending on prior experience, possibly more; the navigation authority recommends at least 20 hours of practical experience.

What does the training cost?

Theory training with software CHF 30.–, driving lesson (a full 60 minutes) CHF 90.–, one-time insurance CHF 90.–, plus navigation authority fees of around CHF 200.–.

Can I do theory and practice at the same time?

Yes. There is no learner's permit in boating – theory and practical training can run in parallel. We recommend starting with the theory.

Which boat do I take the exam on?

The training boat you learned on – thorough knowledge of the boat is required at the exam. The practical exam takes 60 minutes.

Can I take driving lessons in winter too?

Yes, we train all year round. The training boats have cabin heating – and Lake Constance is especially calm in winter.
